SPARKLERS / Ready for learning

Read in Nature

From our friends at the Department of Conservation - we love that this idea is so accessible to everyone while in home-learning, and the combination of reading (learning) and being outdoors will help tamariki feel great!

Learning outcomes

Tamariki take part in a sensory experience that involves connecting to nature while reading.

He aha ai? – Why we love it

Tamariki get to spend time in a space outside that makes them feel happy and calm.

Hei mahi - What to do

Tamariki will need:

  • A reading book

Encourage tamariki to take their book outside and to find one of their favourite, quiet space in their garden.

Let tamariki know that this is an activity that is ongoing and you're like to continue each day. To encourage this tamariki can either collect (from you) a stamp or signature on a bookmark or alternatively make their own tick system for their outdoor reading.

Check in with how it makes them feel to read outside in a special place?

The Department of Conservation have created these cool bookmarks which you might like to upload to Seesaw for tamariki to tick or sign off as they continue their reading outside.

What next?

Tamariki might share their special reading spots with pictures, photos, drawings, or write about them. These could all make great Seesaw or home-learning activities.

You might also try using their reading spot as inspiraton for some mindfulness exercises. Use Sense of the Day as a guide here.

Ngā mihi nui

We love the Department of Conservation and their movement to #teachoutsideNZ They have created some beautiful resources that support learning outside and tuning into our surroundings. We think that these Conservation Week activities are awesome and love that they've allowed us celebrate their ideas on Sparklers!
